Abstract

Relations between the degree of polarization of the incident beam and that of the outgoing beam are discussed for a number of optical devices and for scattering by particles and surfaces. Rigorous upper and lower bounds for the degree of polarization of the outgoing beam are given for cases in which the degree of polarization of the incident beam is known.
