Abstract

Polarization diffusion in communication fibers is studied. Diffusion of the states of polarization in an optical fiber is found to be anisotropic on the surface of the Poincaré sphere. The predicted anisotropy has significant implications for nonlinear evolution in long-distance communication systems.
