Single-mode-fiber birefringent filters

Abstract

It is proposed to utilize optical birefringence in single-mode fibers for construction of wavelength-dependent filters. The birefringence may be natural (a consequence of the drawing process) or induced through external stresses. In the latter case, simple variation of these stresses may be used to tune the filter transfer function.
