Abstract
When an optical fiber is pressed into a V groove, the stress-induced birefringence in the fiber depends on the groove angle 2γ. Ignoring friction, this birefringence should vanish at 2γ = 60°. In practice, friction is dominant, precluding the possibility of birefringence-free holding of the fiber by clamping it into a V groove.
