Probability density function of the intensity in partially polarized speckle fields

Abstract

A partially polarized speckle pattern is regarded as a superposition of two linearly polarized speckle patterns. The probability density function of the intensity is analytically calculated from the bivariate Rayleigh distribution. The resulting formula is compared with previous results. The negative exponential distribution is derived for a partially polarized speckle field. This result is experimentally verified.
